October 2023 Review: Ascent - The LIT Series Book 2 - “This epic horror sequel bites deeper and nastier than the first”

“The gods I've seen are not worth swearing to,” a woman, Chelamah, declares early in Anthony’s harrowing follow-up to Lit. Readers will agree with her assessment, as this entry quickly, vividly dives into the horrors that the everyday heroes of the first book in the series avoided, with Anthony offering several setpieces of monstrous transformations, interdimensional cult blasphemy, flesh rent and singed, and so much worse, all described with gutsy gusto. Prepare for “cruel and vicious assault” and “yellowed jagged teeth.” A mysterious group called the Pantheon is striving to control “leviathans” from beyond, conducting nasty experiments, connecting human conduits to ferocious beasts, killing humans off a list, and relentlessly scheming against each other.

Chelamah’s rightly jolted by beholding the depths of darkness the Pantheon is dabbling with, but Pantheon leaders Jason and Mika have grand, horrifying plans—including Jason’s wish to become the conduit for the most powerful Leviathan of all. Lit introduced Anthony’s world through the perspective of three relatable survivors, adults Ellie and Sam and eight-year-old Josh, who faced lives with leviathans bound to their souls—and eager to kill for them. That trio returns in this sequel, though the shift in focus to Pantheon politics and plotting rather than the heroes’ discovery of leviathans means this entry—dense with grimoires, Circles, oculi, and much more—is not ideal for readers new to the series.

Anthony’s sure handed handling of trauma ensures that scenes with the returning cast feel tender and urgent, especially as Josh is separated from Ellie, their individual leviathans continue stalking them, and Sam accepts an invitation to meet the Pantheon. Ellie’s strength powers the narrative and a potent climax, even as, this time, the story spends much more time in dark minds and dark realms, parsing the rules of Leviathans and surveying carnage, torture, and attacks by beasts with massive teeth. The Ascent is more raw, wrenching, and complex than its predecessor, sometimes moving slowly, suited for lovers of immersive and mind-bending horror.

Writing like a crazy man. Thankfully, I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder which makes me very productive writing atmospheric material! Yay me! Its strange, in summer I just don’t get the authentic mood as naturally as I do in the winter.

Books for Pre-orders from Supa Nova, after I sold out on day one, are due anytime. Have sent emails out to all the beautiful people who ordered. I am so grateful for their patience and also, for their innate understanding of Australia post lol We … all kinda get it. As soon as they arrive, they are on their way to you! Like seriously, the same day.

LIT -RAGE is trucking along nicely. Its astounded me how much fun I am having writing this one and bringing these characters, good and terrifying, to life once more. I will have it done before Summer begins. I am very much looking forward to giving this to my readers to enjoy.

Once again thanks so much for all your support. Please subscribe below and follow me on instagram and facebook links. Possibly Threads…have not decided as yet lol

The secret to writing is to just let it flow. Don’t hold back, just sitting back and having those moments where you stay hidden away in your own mind. It can seem like a daunting task. Distractions…distractions…distractions. Never ending and ongoing but I guess, thats life. Its funny how sometimes you desire a distraction but you know, it’s so you can procrastinate. People want the best from you. regardless of distractions.

RAGE is very far along now. It’s gonna be a long, grizzly ride!

O.K, got to commit to writing one chapter per day to finish draft and have it sent to Editor BEFORE our wedding.

This is turning out to be a BIG finale. Tired but inspired... its the small things that hold you up. Like...what was his eye color again? What was the Psychiatrists name in book one? That minor character woman had a surname...what was it? I think they may have implied that in book two, but I'm not sure.

SO...you have to search the last 1000 published pages to make sure you are not messing up. Consistency, Consistency!

I had an email from Kirkus Magazine congratulating me that LIT has been chosen to be in their quarterly magazine in the USA. That is very, very cool and I am so grateful.

Both LIT and ASCENT were recipients of Literary Titan Gold Book Award. I am very grateful and its a great feeling to know how many people are enjoying your art. I have been very fortunate. Please support your local Authors. It’s so important in a world where art often gets overlooked and goes overseen.

Thank you all for your support.
